Make Your Life Simpler Series: With Rachel Carrell of Koru Kids

Pure Bundle has just launched a new blog series called Make Your Life Simpler. I'm inviting fabulous people & businesses who exist to make parents lives simpler to share their hacks, tools and ideas.

I hope you pick up some tips & inspiration from this new series. Because we can all do with making our lives a little simpler, right?

Our first interview is with the talented, pioneering, refreshingly authentic Rachel Carrell from Koru Kids.

1. Rachel, can you please tell us a bit about yourself?

I’m from New Zealand but I’ve been in the UK for ages, since 2002. I’ve got 2 kids, aged 2 and 5. When I had my first baby and struggled to find flexible childcare I decided to create it myself and set up Koru Kids!

2. What’s your favourite parenting hack?

It’s not really a ‘hack’ but it’s the best advice I ever received. When your kid is having a big emotion that might lead to a meltdown, don't try to reason with them or distract them. Instead, try to verbalise their emotion for them. Just join them in the moment without judging. In the short term, the storm passes a lot faster and in the longer term, they learn how to cope with tough emotions.

3. How do Koru Kids make people’s lives easier?

We specialise in 'after school care', as that’s a tricky time for many families. We find families regular after-school nannies so the kids can go to their after school activities, chill out, have dinner, and parents can come home to have quality time with them before bed. Koru Kids nannies are energetic, flexible and reliable. We also take care of all the administration and payroll, and we’re developing ongoing nanny training.

4. What 3 people | movements | organisations inspire you?

Jacinda Ardern, the Prime Minister of New Zealand, is a constant source of inspiration for me. Also Maria Montessori, an Italian nun who developed the Montessori early years philosophy over 100 years ago. And thirdly, Janet Lansbury, a blogger and proponent of another philosophy of early years childcare that I love and try to implement every day in my own parenting. My 'hack' above comes from reading Janet!

5. What are you working on at the moment?

We’re working on further developing our childcare services, including by introducing ‘nanny share’. Nanny share is such a beautiful thing… the nannies get paid more, the families pay less, and the children have a friend to play with. We’ve recently developed an online Family Finder matching tool, a completely free service that helps families that want to share a nanny find each other so they can bring down the cost of childcare.

6. Rachel, what’s something about you that Google doesn’t know?

I can't swim.

7. What message would you put on a billboard?

HAVE YOU HEARD OF NANNY SHARE? :)
Nanny share is the least understood form of childcare yet for many families the best option! Nanny share lets two families share one nanny who looks after all the children. It’s cheaper for the families, the nanny gets paid more, and the children play with their friends, so it’s a win-win-win. It’s also brilliant for community-building and I believe it’s a big part of solving the current childcare crisis.
